Disputes at work? Here are some tips about employment law

Whilst we all try to work hard at our jobs there are unfortunately some instances where we may feel we are not being treated fairly.  Sometimes these disagreements can hinder our jobs or seriously threaten our jobs too; it may be worth checking with an employment law solicitor to see where you stand and what can be done.  Below are three tips that you should consider if you are looking to take legal action.

Understand the situation

If you have begun thinking about legal action then you need to understand the implications of your situation.  It is likely the case that you will have exhausted all other avenues before taking legal action, if not then you should seriously reconsider.  Talking to your company's Human Resources department should be your first port of call as they will be best suited to taking care of your issue.  If you are left unsatisfied after this then legal action may be your next step, but it's worth remembering that any legal action because of any accusations you make will probably jeopardize your job's future.

Hire the right solicitor

Solicitors cover a wide range of different legal cases, whilst you can hire a solicitor who caters to many cases you may have more success with solicitors that specialise in certain areas such as employment law.  When looking for a good solicitor you should be looking for solicitors that have had many (preferably) successful employment law related cases.  It's also worth informing them of your case to the finest detail, if they do not fully understand your case how are they supposed to best represent you?

Employment law solicitors can do more for you

Employment law specialising solicitors are not just for defending or pressing allegations, they can also study your employer's guidelines, practices and handbooks to make sure that they are adhering to them and if there are any areas they are lacking in.  Likewise if you are an employer and need to make sure that you are operating correctly then an employment law solicitor can draw up contracts and agreements to make sure your company is covered too.

The important thing to remember is that legal action should always be the last resort option with disputes in the workplace.  The first contact should be with your manager or if you do not feel comfortable talking to them then talking with your HR representative is the best choice as they will be able to provide help and support, if they are unable to help then this is when you should look at legal proceedings.
